A few months ago, we were treated to a first look at a bald Matt Damon in Neill Blompkamp’s new sci-fi social allegory, Elysium. The image circulated the Internet and left fans of Blompkamp’s first film, District 9, hungry for more. Now Sony has released a new image from the film that teases Matt Damon’s Max character lowering his mega-gun.

The new image is a lot like the first image released this past July, only with an armor-ready Matt Damon walking through a tunnel and wielding his “ChemRail” rifle. At the moment, it is unclear what “ChemRail” is or how it fits into the narrative about class division, but the image certainly looks badass! It almost looks like a scene from James Cameron’s 1986 film Aliens.

Elysium is Neill Blompkamp’s follow-up to his debut film, 2009’s District 9. The sci-fi film was a sleeper hit, which is one of the reasons why Sony pushed back Elysium’s release date from March 2013 to August 2013. They want to see if they can capture lightning in a bottle again. As it stands, Elysium is one of the most anticipated sci-fi films of 2013, following J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek Into Darkness and Alfonso Cuarón’s Gravity.

The story of Elysium is set in the year 2159, where the Earth is a third-world wasteland. The very wealthy are living in a space station called Elysium, orbiting the Earth, and the very poor are left to toil on the overpopulated planet. Secretary Delacourt (Jodie Foster) oppresses the poor people of Earth as she tries to ensure the luxurious lifestyle of the wealthy people on the man-made space station. Max (Matt Damon) agrees to take a dangerous mission to Elysium to hopefully bring equality to these polarized worlds. Elysium also features William Fichtner, Alice Braga, Sharlto Copley, and Diego Luna.

Elysium will hit theaters everywhere on August 9, 2013.
