With only three months until its release, the new science fiction movie Oblivion from director Joseph Kosinski is quickly building anticipation. Universal Studios has released a new image from the movie, featuring Tom Cruise as Jack Harper, and his awesome bubble spacecraft.

The image looks like it came from the cover of a pulpy sci-fi novel from authors Robert A. Heinlein or John Brunner. The design of the bubble spacecraft is pretty inventive and futuristic looking. It fits with what we’ve seen with Oblivion’s first teaser trailer, and other images released a few weeks ago featuring a captured Tom Cruise.

Set in the distant future, Oblivion is set in the aftermath of a brutal war between humans and aliens. Tom Cruise plays a lonely drone mechanic named Jack Harper who is stationed on the abandoned ruins of Earth. But when Jack rescues a beautiful and mysterious woman named Julia (Olga Kurylenko) after a hideous crash landing, his world becomes into question as his life is confronted with the truth behind the war.

Oblivion is positioned to be one of the biggest movies of the spring season. It is also one of the first of many science fiction movies released in 2013, including Star Trek Into Darkness, M. Night Shyamalan’s After Earth, and Neill Blomkamp’s Elysium. Oblivion stars Tom Cruise, Morgan Freeman, Olga Kurylenko, Melissa Leo, Zoë Bell, and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau. Joseph Kosinski (Tron: Legacy) co-wrote the film with William Monahan (The Departed) and Michael Arndt (Toy Story 3, the upcoming Star Wars: Episode VII). There are a lot of great names attached to this film, so hopefully it will live up to the hype.

Oblivion will be released on April 12th in IMAX and everywhere else on April 19th.
