Almost Human Returns With A Bang (For Two Weeks): Today In Science & Science Fiction

While it’s had its bumpy moments, Almost Human is still one of our favorite new shows of 2013, and it’s got the potential to only get better as it continues in the new year. Unfortunately, Fox’s programming choices continue to prove troubling. A few weeks ago, creator/showrunner J.H. Wyman addressed fan concerns that Fox had been airing the early episodes of the show out of order — what should have been episodes two and four still haven’t aired — and now the show is back from winter hiatus…but only for two weeks.
The show returns tonight with episode 1.7, “Simon Says,” and also airs a new episode next Monday. After that, it vanishes again for another two weeks, finally returning with episode 1.9 on February 3 (an episode that will guest star Night Court’s John Larroquette as Dorian’s creator. Why bring the show back just long enough to annoy viewers that it’s going off the air again? We’ve got no clue, but this is exactly the sort of annoyance that is driving more and more people to consume their shows via Netflix, Amazon, or Hulu, where you can burn through entire seasons without having to deal with the vagaries of network scheduling.
Tonight’s episode pits John (Karl Urban) and Dorian (Michael Ealy) up against a nutjob with a fetish for exploding necklaces. Here’s the official synopsis for “Simon Says,” which premieres tonight at 8/7c on Fox.
Det. Kennex and Dorian investigate Simon (guest star David Dastmalchian), a psychopathic killer who is strapping bombs to his victims’ neck and broadcasting their final moments over the internet. When Simon targets Kennex, the team is in a nail-biting race against time to save his life. Meanwhile, a power deficiency affects Dorian’s energy level, causing him to have unexpected outbursts.
Rinko Kikuchi (January 6, 1981)
Japanese actress Rinko Kikuchi celebrates her birthday today. She landed on our radar with this past summer’s Pacific Rim, and can currently be seen in Keanu Reeves’ 47 Ronin (which, unfortunately, is shaping up to be a big, fat dud at the box office). She was also nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her work in Alejandro González Iñárritu’s 2006 film Babel, which also starred Bratt Pitt and Cate Blanchett. But she’ll always be badass Jaeger pilot Mako Mori to us. GFR wishes her a happy birthday!
