On the surface, The Host might look like another silly teenage love story from Twilight author Stephenie Meyer, but there might be something more to this sci-fi film. The director, Andrew Niccol, has had plenty of experience with science fiction in the past, some good Gattaca), and some not so good (In Time). The film’s cast is top tier, led by Saoirse Ronan (Hanna) and joined by Diane Kruger, Emily Browning, and William Hurt. So what could go wrong? With only a week before the film hits theaters, Open Road Films has released a new trailer for The Host.

The Host is set in the distant future, when people from around the world are infected by an alien race called “Souls.” They take over a person’s body and wipe any memory of their past life. Saoirse Ronan plays Melanie Stryder, a young woman who is part of a small group of resistance fighters. When she becomes infected, she tries to fight off the parasitic aliens as they slowly take over her mind, body, and soul.

The Host seems like an updated version of Invasion of the Body Snatchers, only with teenagers and emo angst. Andrew Niccol also wrote the screenplay for the film adaptation of Stephenie Meyer’s best-selling novel. It will be interesting to see if Niccol can pull this one off. The 48-year-old director could use a hit after the middling critical and box office success of 2011’s dystopian science fiction film In Time, starring Justin Timberlake, Amanda Seyfried, and Cillian Murphy.

The Host will infect theaters everywhere on March 29th.
