HBO has ordered a pilot script for a new drama that will team up Belgian director Michael R. Roskam with Breaking Bad executive producer Mark Johnson and world-renowned director Michael Mann. The crime drama is titled Buda Bridge and will be set in Brussels in the near future.
Roskam will write, produce and direct the pilot episode of Buda Bridge for HBO while Mann and Johnson serves as the series’ executive producers. The TV series will follow the investigation of a woman found dead on Buda Bridge that leads to more violent crimes and eerie science in the gritty European city.
Michael Mann was the executive producer of HBO’s short-lived TV drama Luck starring Dustin Hoffman, Dennis Farina, and John Ortiz. Mann was also the director of critically acclaimed films like Heat, The Insider, and Ali. Mark Johnson’s credits as producer include Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark, Galaxy Quest, and The Chronicles of Narnia films.
Roskam’s first film, Bullhead, was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 2011. The film focused on the seedy underbelly of the corrupt meatpacking industry in Belgium. Johnson, who was on the Academy Foreign Language Film Selection Committee, met Roskam after Bullhead was nominated. Although the film did not win the Academy Award, Mann and Johnson were really impressed with Bullhead. They wanted to work with Roskam on a future project after that first meeting, Roskam then presented the pair with an idea for the TV series Buda Bridge.
