Season seven of Matt Groening’s Futurama starts tonight with a two-episode, hour long premiere. Those episodes are “The Bots and the Bees” and “A Farewell to Arms.” It’s pretty amazing that Futurama is still going strong after its 2003 cancellation. The show managed a miraculous comeback, this time on Comedy Central instead of FOX, in 2008 after a five-year hiatus. In between that five year absence, FOX has released four straight-to-DVD Futurama movies, which felt like a “hidden” season of the series.

To promote the beginning of season seven of Futurama, Comedy Central put together a handmade version of the show’s iconic opening sequence. It’s full of sight gags like “made by hand (and tentacle)” opening bumper.

The opening sequence is recreates the show’s futuristic cityscape, spaceships and tube transportation system with paper cut-outs and plastic. It’s a nice touch to see actual hands moving these pieces around the screen.

Here’s the normal Futurama opening for comparison…

The handmade Futurama opening sequence looks and feels like something Michel Gondry would do. The style is pretty similar to his music videos, commercials and feature films like Be Kind Rewind or The Science of Sleep.

It ends with the beloved Professor Farnsworth stating “The Future Is Closer Than You Think.” This new version might tease the idea of it actually getting placed before an episode this season or maybe if an entire episode might be “animated” in this way. Knowing the history of the series, it wouldn’t be a ridiculous move.

Season seven of Futurama premieres tonight on Comedy Central at 10/9c.
