I’m still not sure if I should be excited about Gavin Hood’s upcoming adaptation of Ender’s Game. There’s a lot to worry about, but with Asa Butterfield being offered the titular role it’s easier to believe the money behind the film knows that getting big names to play the leads is not the most important consideration.
We recently heard that Harrison Ford is a top contender for Graff. Variety reports that True Grit star Hailee Steinfeld is being offered the role of Petra. Considering what a sisterly type of character she is I wonder how much of Valentine, Ender’s actual sister in the book, will be rolled into Petra to keep the film’s length tolerable. She teaches Ender a lot about the Battle School and how the battles work, including how to shoot. It would be easy to roll that in with a sibling style relationship as well.
Steinfeld has already proven herself to be capable of playing a strong and confident young girl, so she’s an ideal casting choice. I supported her as Katniss in The Hunger Games, but perhaps this is a better fit. So far the casting for Ender’s Game is making me hopeful. Viggo or Harrison would work well as Colonel Graff, although Ford is the better choice. If Ford does accept the role then Russel Crowe has to be our Mazer Rackham.
