Ronan the AccuserWith director James Gunn taking Guardians of the Galaxy into production in a few short weeks, there are still a lot of questions about the Marvel movie’s main villain. We know that actor Lee Pace was recently cast to play the villain, but it remains unclear who exactly that will be.

According to JoBlo.com, inside sources within Marvel have stated that the villain in Guardians will be Ronan the Accuser. One of the cosmic villains in Marvel’s Galactic universe, Ronan the Accuser is one of Thanos’ main henchmen.

Ronan is a member of the Kree Empire in the Greater Magellanic Cloud. He’s also a member of the Accuser Corps, Kree’s military governors and jurists. Ronan has the ability of superhuman strength, endurance, speed, and reflexes, and wields a powerful device called the “Universal Weapon,” which uses cosmic energy to do anything its possessor wills.

This rumor from JoBlo conflicts Latino Review’s reports that the villain in Guardians of the Galaxy will instead be The Controller, another of Thanos’ henchmen. Either way, it seems like Guardians of the Galaxy will feature one of Thanos’ henchmen as its main villain, which makes sense given that all of the films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase Two will eventually lead to The Avengers 2 in 2015. That film’s director Joss Whedon has teased the eventual appearance of Thanos, who might not wreak havoc on Earth until The Avengers 3.

As for Guardians of the Galaxy, production will start this June. As of this posting, Marvel and James Gunn have yet to cast the roles of Rocket Raccoon and Groot. Actors Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, and WWE superstar Dave Bautista have been cast to play Star-Lord, Gamora, and Drax the Destroyer, respectively.

Guardians of the Galaxy will hit theaters everywhere on August 1, 2014, in 3D. You can see Ronan the Accuser in action in The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes below:
