GotG VillainsAs Marvel Studios gets set for their presentations at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, we know they will be featuring a few of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s upcoming films, including Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Thor: The Dark World in the massive Hall H. Another of their potential big players is Guardians of the Galaxy, which is currently in production in London, England. As director James Gunn puts something together to show the Hall H crowd, the identities of the film’s villains has been leaked from a source within Marvel (but still no word who will play Rocket Raccoon or Groot).

According to Den of Geek’s inside sources, Guardians‘ trio of villains will include Benicio Del Toro as The Collector, Lee Pace as Ronan the Accuser, and Karen Gillain as the space pirate Nebula. It was previously rumored that the super-villains The Controller and Angela would be involved, but it looks like that might not be the case now. Sorry, Marvel fans, no Thanos in this movie. Let’s break it down.

The Collector was born Taneleer Tivan, more than a billion years ago. He is one of the Elders of the Universe and comes from the planet Cygnus X-1. As The Collector, he wields the Power Primordial, which has the ability to augment physical attributes, restructure molecules, create force fields, and allow teleportation. He also has the ability to manipulate cosmic energy and increase in mass and size. The Collector once possessed the Infinity Gem that could control reality, but it was later stolen by Thanos for his infamous Infinity Gauntlet.

Ronan The Accuser is a member of the Kree Empire in the Greater Magellanic Cloud. He’s also a member of the Accuser Corps, Kree’s military governors and jurists. Ronan has the ability of superhuman strength, endurance, speed, and reflexes, and wields a powerful device called the “Universal Weapon,” which uses cosmic energy blasts.

Nebula is a brutal Luphomoid space pirate and mercenary. She once seized control of Thanos’ spaceship Sanctuary II and had claimed to be his granddaughter. She was also one of Gamora’s followers in The Graces, a group of deadly female warriors. Nebula is a very athletic woman who has a gifted intellect and is a brilliant battle strategist. She uses blasters on her wrists that use cosmic energy. Nebula also has a device that allows her to shift shapes.

We will be getting some vital information about Guardians of the Galaxy at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, but if these rumors are true, then Marvel’s superhero space opera will have some big stakes involved, namely the introduction of the Kree Empire (and hopefully the Skrulls) into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. There is no way to get around it; Phase Two (and possibly Phase Three) is going cosmic in a big way.

Guardians of the Galaxy is positioned to be one of the biggest Marvel movies since The Avengers, combining the core team of cosmic peacekeepers, the band of super villains, and the Nova Corps. The only way to make it bigger would be to introduce S.W.O.R.D. (Sentient World Observation and Response Department), a counter-terrorism and intelligence agency in charge of protecting the Earth from alien invasions. I wouldn’t be surprised if Glenn Close ends up playing Special Agent Abigail Brand, the agency’s director, who is a “Nick Fury-type.”

Guardians of the Galaxy will also feature Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Michael Rooker, Ophelia Lovibond, and John C. Reilly as Rhomann Dey. The movie will hit theaters everywhere on August 1, 2014, in 3D.
