fire-01Hollywood studios are always looking for new potential film franchises, especially ones based on successful young adult books. However, for every Harry Potter, Twilight, or Hunger Games, we get an Eragon, Beautiful Creatures, Golden Compass, or Spiderwick Chronicles. It remains to be seen which camp The Fire Sermon will fall into, but DreamWorks has hired a new writer to adapt the yet-to-be released novel.

According to THR, screenwriter Nicole Perlman has come aboard to deliver her own version of The Fire Sermon. Perlman co-wrote Marvel Studios’ upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy with the film’s director, James Gunn. She’s also rumored to be working on a possible Black Widow movie for Marvel. Carla Hacken is set to produce the would-be franchise starter for DreamWorks. Hacken also produced Walk the Line, The Devil Wears Prada, and Bride Wars. She has recently made a run for young adult properties such as Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, just to name a few.

The Fire Sermon is set 400 years in the future. After a nuclear apocalypse, civilization is re-built without technology, and all the humans left on the planet are twins. Each set of twins includes the Alpha, which is the physically perfect one, and the Omega, which bears some mutations. In this new society, the Omega twins are forced to live in separate settlements, even though the twins are connected so that if one dies, both die. The new book and film will follow the relationship between a twin brother and sister, and how one of them becomes a leader in the dystopian society.

Nicole Perlman was part of Marvel Studios’ now-defunct writers program when she worked on Guardians of the Galaxy. She also wrote the action crime movie Dr. Livingstone for director Shawn Levy and Twentieth Century Fox. Currently, Perlman is working on Terra Incognita, a secret project for producer Justin Springer and Disney.

The Fire Sermon is a new young adult book series from author Dr. Francesca Haig. The book has only been published and sold in the United Kingdom since June 2013 and is slated for release in the United States sometime in 2015. Haig is a Senior Lecturer for Creative Writing at the University of Chester in England. She received her Bachelor of Creative Arts and PhD at the University of Melbourne in Australia. The Fire Sermon is her debut novel.

DreamWorks has yet to announce when The Fire Sermon will hit theaters, but it will most likely be sometime in 2016 or 2017, after the book releases here in the States.
