The Guardians of the Galaxy trailer is due to premiere on Jimmy Kimmel Live! tonight, but Marvel has given us an early present for those who can’t wait: a 20-second teaser full of new footage that previews what we’ll get to see tonight. Check it out above.

We finally get to see the Guardians of the Galaxy in action and it looks amazing! The preview starts with Korath the Pursuer (Djimon Hounsou) asking Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), “Who are you?,” which is followed with a collection of quick cuts showing off the cosmic team. We only get a very, very brief glimpse at Rocket’s tail end (no pun intended) but we’ll undoubtedly get a better look in the full trailer. The teaser also gives us a first look at the space pirate Nebula (Doctor Who‘s Karen Gillan), complete with a bald head. Hopefully we’ll get to see Ronan the Accuser (Lee Pace), Yondu Udonta (Michael Rooker), and the Nova Corps later tonight.

The images below provide a closer look at the action featured in the special sneak peek. The separate members of the cosmic team are featured in single shots without any interactions with each other. It seems that we’re mainly looking at the character introductions from the film, mostly Star-Lord’s time in the space prison Kyln. We also get a very brief look at the mysterious blue orb that plays a major part of the film’s plot, and which is believed to be one of the Infinity Gems.

I’m really glad that there’s a shot of some of the space aliens in the movie. It looks like the Guardians film will be just as weird as the comic book, so that’s a good thing for the fans, but I’m concerned that it might not take with the general public. Hopefully it doesn’t look too weird for casual viewers, but overall Guardians of the Galaxy seems like it will be a fun adventure movie.

The first trailer for the new movie will be released on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on ABC at 11:35 ET/PT. Chris Pratt will appear on the late night talk show to introduce the trailer and talk about the upcoming comic book movie. The trailer will most likely pop up online around the same time, so it won’t be long before it’s readily available for everyone.

Guardians of the Galaxy follows Peter Quill, a half-human, half-alien who finds himself in the middle of a galaxy-wide manhunt after he steals a mysterious orb. In order to escape, he is forced into an uneasy alliance with a group of misfits and outlaws. When he learns of the orb’s true power, he must rally his new team to save the galaxy from a mysterious new threat, the Kree Empire and Ronan the Accuser.

Guardians of the Galaxy stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Lee Pace, Benicio del Toro, Karen Gillan, Djimon Hounsou, Michael Rooker, Olivia Lovibond, John C. Reilly, and Glenn Close, and opens in theaters everywhere on August 1.
