Then we get to meet the team. First up is Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista). He’s a hulking brute who’s been on a rampage of vengeance since the death of his wife and family. One of the fun elements of the trailer is all the little details in the lineup shots. For instance, here you can learn that Drax is wanted for 22 counts of murder, and he’s well-suited for battle, sporting enhanced strength and “advanced cellular regeneration.”
Meet Gamora, played by Zoe Saldana (Avatar, Star Trek). She’s just as much a badass as Drax, and she’s even known as “the most dangerous woman in the universe.” Speaking to Total Film, director James Gunn says, “Zoe and Karen [Gillan] are the two most hardass characters in the movie — they’re our Clint Eastwoods.” The last survivor of her race, in the comics Gamora was the adopted daughter of cosmic baddies Thanos. We know Thanos will play a big part in the Marvel Cinematic Universe at some point, having been teased in Avengers. Guardians is full of characters with connections to Thanos, but there’s no word if he’ll put in a surprise appearance, get name-dropped, or not appear at all. I’d be very surprised if it’s the latter. One of the main selling points of Guardians is to introduce the wider Marvel universe beyond Earth, in preparation for some truly galactic-level dangers down the road, likely in Avengers 3.
