Guardians of the GalaxyWhile many casual fans probably aren’t overly familiar with the source material for Marvel’s next cinematic outing, the space adventure Guardians of the Galaxy, they’re going to have plenty of opportunities to rectify that situation. The comic book giant has announced yet another new book in the Guardians family, which joins a slew that they’ve already let us know about. There are also two new photos for those of us who would rather look at pretty pictures than read words. Reading is hard.

In the clip and trailer that have already been released, we got to see protagonist Star-Lord aka Peter Jason Quill (Chris Pratt) attempt to steal a sweet-looking space orb, one that is widely believed to be one of the Infinity Gems. The aftermath of that is action packed, but this first picture shows Quill gawking at the glowing orb before he tries to snatch it. There’s a definite Raiders of the Lost Ark vibe to this image, and the entire scene, and that combination of adventure and humor is exactly what we’re looking for from this movie, and what will differentiate it from Marvel’s other offerings.

Guardians of the GalaxyPicture number two come directly from director James Gunn himself, and shows Star-Lord in his full get up, which includes that cool mask he wears and that long trench coat he’s fond of wearing. The attire makes sense, it’s cold in space, and maybe the helmet helps him breath on worlds where it might not otherwise be easy for a half-human space outlaw. Gunn Tweeted the picture with the message “Knock, knock. Who’s there?” Again, that sarcastic sense of humor is something we’re looking forward to.

As far as the comics go, you’re going to have to start early in order to keep up, especially since, according to THR, Marvel is adding two new titles to the already packed Guardians lineup. Details beyond this announcement are nonexistent at this point as both are currently “classified,” whatever that means. But don’t worry, there will still be plenty to go around. July will see the release of both 100th Anniversary Special #1: Guardians of the Galaxy by Andy Lanning and Gustavo Duarte, as well as Legendary Star Lord #1 by Sam Humphries and Paco Medina. The publisher is also set to release a one-off called Guardians of the Galaxy: Galaxy’s Most Wanted featuring the further adventures of Rocket Raccoon and his seven-foot-tall alien tree buddy Groot. There’s also a Rocket Raccoon title that was announced in February, the furry little critter will get a solo shot for Free Comic Book day, and there will be a reprint of an issue of Thor from the 1980s that prominently features Drax the Destroyer, who is one of the Guardians gang. Told you that you were going to be busy.

And after you catch up on all of your ancillary reading, Guardians of the Galaxy opens everywhere on August 1. The movie stars Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Drax the Destroyer, John C. Reilly, Benicio Del Toro, Karen Gillen, Michael Rooker, and Glenn Close.
