GrootEverybody Loves Groot
In fact, Gunn said that everyone who sees Guardians of the Galaxy loves Groot “the most.” For those unfamiliar with the comics, Groot is an plant-based extraterrestrial lifeform (read: big damn plant monster), sort of like Zhaan from Farscape, but without the nice complexion. He’s best buds/partners in crime with Rocket, and he’s been mo-capped and voiced in the film by Vin Diesel. Ha also only ever says one thing — “I am Groot” — only Rocket can interpret the subtleties to translate what he’s saying.

Asked how many times he had to say, “I Am Groot,” Diesel replied that it felt like a thousand. “We wanted each ‘I am Groot’ to mean something different,” says Diesel. “It reminded me, as an actor, how much we can do with so little.”

Groot Helped Diesel Grieve And Heal
Diesel began working on Groot shortly after the death of Fast & the Furious actor Paul Walker, who died in a car crash on November 30, 2013. Diesel and Walker were very close, but Diesel said that playing Groot helped him through that difficult time:

It was the month after the accident happened with my brother Paul Walker and it was the first time I had worked since. Although it was challenging, just to get back to work was therapeutic- especially as Groot. There was an innocence about the character that was just refreshing- and it may have been more challenging under other circumstances, but at that time, it was very therapeutic.

Karen Gillan Enjoyed Playing A Villain
Actress Karen Gillan is best known for playing the Eleventh Doctor’s companion Amy Pond on Doctor Who, a role that’s night and day and hair away from Nebula, the role Gillan is playing in Guardians of the Galaxy. She’s the vicious space pirate and mercenary Nebula, which required her to shave her head and get painted a lovely shade of blue. We don’t know much about her incarnation in the Guardians movie, but we do know there’s a major smackdown between her and Gamora (Zoe Saldana). Gillan said she enjoyed playing a character very different from Amy, and that she “gave [Nebula] a reason to be sadistic.” She then added, “It was secretly really fun to put men in headlocks.” I’m guessing the men probably didn’t mind.
