FossLegendary British Sci-Fi Artist Chris Foss Worked On Guardians
Chris Foss is rightly a icon, whose illustrations have adorned the covers of books by Isaac Asimov, E.E. “Doc” Smith, Jack Vance, and more. He was also hired to work on director Alejandro Jodorowsky’s ill-fated attempt to adapt Frank Herbert’s Dune back in the ’70s. Gunn says Foss was a strong inspiration for Guardians from the get-go:

Charlie Wood, our production designer, was one of my primary partners on this film. We started with long long discussions, lots of photos, and my love of the artist Chris Foss — who we actually hired to work on the movie. He’s a classic science fiction artist from the ‘70s and ‘80s.

Star-Lord’s Walkman Is Full Of Classic Tunes, Some Of Which Aren’t In The Film
We already knew that Star-Lord’s battered Walkman and cassette tapes were more than just an excuse to fill out the soundtrack. “[The tapes are] the last reminder he has of his childhood on earth,” said Gunn. “The music is also a way to keep us grounded in this out of the world space epic.” In fact, the tape contains more music than we’ll actually hear in the film. Gunn revealed, “We have the whole tape — I gave it to Chris before we shot so he could listen to it over and over beforehand. So I won’t give away a song in the movie. But a song on the tape that’s not in the movie is ‘Magic’ by Pilot.”

Chris Pratt Was Born to Play Star-Lord
Although he’s been great on Parks & Recreation and has had roles in major films such as Zero Dark Thirty and The Lego Movie, Guardians of the Galaxy will be his first time out front as a leading man. Nevertheless, Gunn say Pratt was absolutely the right guy for the part. Gunn said:

It’s difficult to say what casting is like, but when someone fulfills a role completely, becomes a character, and even goes beyond what you originally expected, you just know. I don’t know if I believe in true love and soul mates, but I do believe certain roles have soul mates, and Star-Lord and Chris are soul mates.

Star-Lord Will Be Packing A Version Of His Element Gun From The Comics
In the comics, Star-Lord’s Element Gun allows him to project any of the four elements: earth, air, water, and fire. Pratt says, “It’s not the exact elemental gun that you see in the comics but it’s close. His gun is awesome. Two great blasters and they are amazing and sadly they did not let me keep one but the next time i see one I’m going to steal it.”
