PrisonThe Guardians Were Already On A Collision Course Before They Got Arrested
We already knew that the Guardians linked up and joined forces to stage a prison break from the ominously titled space jail “the Kyln,” but it turns out they were already going to cross each other’s paths regardless. As we’ve seen in the trailers, the inciting incident of the whole story is Quill stealing the Magic Space Orb Doohickey, which is presumed to be another of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s equivalents of the Infinity Stones, joining the two we’ve already seen in the form of the Tesseract and the Aether. Gamora (and Nebula, presumably) were sent to recover the Orb for Ronan/Thanos, although Gamora insists that she actually planned to betray them and not hand it over. One big surprise: Rocket (Bradley Cooper) and Groot (Vin Diesel) were chasing a bounty on Quill’s head. If so, there’s obviously a story there, as Yondu has been described as a “paternal figure” to Quill — clearly there’s been a falling out.

As for Drax (Dave Bautista), he isn’t part of the initial prison-break plan, but he makes a deal with Quill in the midst of it. He’ll help them escape in exchange for Gamora helping him to find Thanos. If you don’t know your Guardians backstory, Thanos was responsible for the deaths of Drax’s entire family, so it’s not surprising he’d like to have a face-to-face with the Mad Titan. Speaking of which…
