If you were a part of the lucky crowd who got a chance to watch the 17-minute preview of James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy tonight, then I bid you a fond congratulations. (You can read David’s report on the footage right here.) I can’t imagine watching that much footage without actually sitting down for the entire feature, but apparently Marvel has no problems tempting fans’ appetites that way. Instead, I engorged myself on the extended trailer that was released, which features almost as much new footage as the film’s very first preview did. This movie is going to be amazing!

While the first crop of trailers were of the “here is the Guardians lineup and how each of these characters fits into a specific stereotype,” the last few have mostly been centered around Peter “Star-Lord” Quill (Chris Pratt) bringing the group together and defining their goals and strategies in this giant battle against Ronan the Accuser (Lee Pace), who makes his presence known several times in this promo. Which is awesome, as he’s been fairly absent since the beginning. (Sadly, Karen Gillan’s Nebula only appears in her knife wielding stance that the character was introduced with, as well as a too-brief fight scene. More Nebula!)

It all starts with Groot being surprised by a cassette player — because who wouldn’t be? — and soon brings the Guardians together for one badass mission. We know everyone by now, right? There’s the one-of-a-kind Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper), treeman Groot (Vin Diesel), the vicious Gamora (Zoe Saldana) and the vengeful Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista). These, plus the hammy Star-Lord, are the Guardians, and they’re ready to kick your ass. You see, Peter stole a priceless orb, and Ronan wants it back. Bad enough to kill? And then some, I’m guessing.

And here’s another great look at Ronan’s menacing presence.

And speaking of characters we barely ever get to see, how about the Collector, played by Benicio Del Toro?

And because I can’t possibly stop popping images on you people, how about our first clear look at Michael Rooker’s Yondu, Peter Quill’s pseudo-surrogate space father? He’s got just as killer a mohawk as everyone else in this movie who also has a mohawk.

Okay, so I don’t feel like I’ve seen everything this movie has to offer, but we’re getting closer and closer to watching it from end to end. Guardians of the Galaxy comes out on August 1. Be there, or be made fun of by everyone else in the galaxy.
