I just recently spent a few hundred words singing the praises of T2, but James Cameron’s original is nearly as good. You’ve Arnold Schwarzenegger playing the role he was born to play, giving us a genuinely frightening screen villain good enough that I can almost retroactively forget that things like The Last Action Hero or Batman & Robin even exist. Plus, it introduced most of us to Michael Biehn, the guy who defined ’80s action heroes to me even more than Arnie and Sylvester Stallone did, since he was just a guy determined to get the job done, rather than a musclebound behemoth. Even 30 years later, Terminator still stands shoulder to shoulder with any modern blockbuster for pure entertainment value, and we can only hope that the upcoming Terminator: Genesis can recapture some of the brilliance that made Cameron’s first outing into the world of time-traveling killer cyborgs such an entertaining ride in the first place.
