Nova PrimeAfter Marvel’s amazing presentation of Guardians of the Galaxy at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, the cast and crew are back in London, England to resume the film’s production. Although Guardians won’t release until August 2014, the buzz is definitely building for Marvel’s superhero space opera after the footage screened in Comic-Con’s Hall H. This was the first time an audience got a glimpse of the cosmic team in action. One cast member not present at Marvel’s presentation, however, was the Academy Award-nominated Glenn Close. But now we know who she will be playing in the fourth movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase Two.

Marvel has confirmed that Glenn Close will step into the role of Nova Prime. Also known as Tanak Valt, Nova Prime is one of the founders and the high commander of the Nova Corps. Traditionally a male character, Nova Prime has the abilities of superhuman strength, endurance and resistance to injury, and flight. She is also a skilled warrior and space pilot. Rhomann Dey (John C. Reilly) is another of the Nova Corps’ leaders.

Honestly, I thought Glenn Close would’ve been perfect for Abigail Brand, the commanding officer of S.W.O.R.D. (Sentient World Observation and Response Department). This secret organization is a S.H.I.E.L.D. offshoot that deals with defending the Earth from extraterrestrial threats. Marvel has yet to introduce S.W.O.R.D. into their Cinematic Universe, however. Considering that Guardians of the Galaxy takes place mainly in outer space and will introduce the Nova Corps and the Kree Empire into Phase Two, it’s only a matter of time before the cosmic threat comes to Earth. Recently, Marvel has also confirmed that actor Djimon Hounsou will play Korath the Pursuer, a member of the Starforce and ally of Ronan the Accuser.

Marvel had a good outing at San Diego Comic-Con this year. Guardians of the Galaxy is the first new franchise film in Marvel’s Phase Two plan, so it can definitely benefit from the extra buzz. (The other movies — Thor: The Dark World, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and Avengers 2 are sequels to Phase One movies.) Phase Two is shaping up nicely to get all the pieces together for The Avenger: Age of Ultron.

We don’t know much about the story of Guardians of the Galaxy ywr, but the word is that it will center on Peter Quill/Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) in the lead role. “A U.S. pilot who ends up in space in the middle of a universal conflict and goes on the run with futuristic ex-cons who have something everyone wants.”

Guardians of the Galaxy will feature Chris Pratt as Star-Lord, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax The Destroyer, Benicio del Toro as The Collector, Lee Pace as Ronan The Accuser, Karen Gillan as Nebula, and Michael Rooker as Yondu. British actor Olivia Lovibond was cast in an unspecified role, while Troma Entertainment co-founder Lloyd Kaufman is rumored to make a cameo appearance in the film. And yet, no word on who will voice Rocket Raccoon or Groot.

Guardians of the Galaxy will hit theaters everywhere on August 1, 2014, in 3D.
