New Regency and Len Wiseman are teaming up to adapt the futuristic western comic book The New West. Wiseman, who is helming this summer’s Total Recall remake, is set to produce the picture, and likely will not direct.
Jimmy Palmiotti (Jonah Hex, All-Star Western) wrote The New West, two-issue arc that first appeared in 2005. The story is set in Los Angeles in the near future. An electromagnetic pulse bomb was detonated, causing all technology to fail. “In this hostile environment, a disgraced former LAPD detective must rescue a kidnapped mayor with only a horse and a sword.”
Two things spring immediately to mind when I read this description. First, I can’t help but think of Dark Angel, the James Cameron produced sci-fi show from the turn of the millennium that introduced us all to Jessica Alba. Every time I read a reference to an EMP that’s the first thing that comes to mind. The second thing that occurs to me is Escape From New York. That’s mostly due to the rescuing-the-kidnapped-public-figure angle of the plot. That’s not a bad combo, I have a weird place in my heart for Dark Angel, and I’d definitely watch this.
So far there is no one attached to work on the script, but they’re reportedly reaching out to writers. Palmiotti has written scripts before—for shows like Painkiller Jane, and collaborated with Garth Ennis on scripts for video games for The Punisher and Ghost Rider—so I wonder if that’s an option they’re considering.
