Futurama Rendered In 3D GGI Is Absolutely Spectacular

Futurama may be dead and gone, and we’re pretty sure that it’s for real this time, but that doesn’t mean we’re going to forget about it anytime soon. Most of us will probably spend the next thousand years waiting to see just how accurate Matt Groening’s vision of the future is, and decrying the fact that we don’t yet have bending robots to bend all of the things we need bent. We can always cryogenically freeze ourselves to get there and see it on our own. Artist Alexi Zakharov rendered the world of the beloved animated series in 3D, and the result is nothing short of spectacular.
Just take a moment to watch this short video that re-imagines the New New York skyline of the 31st century in breathtaking detail. You can’t help but marvel as this slick, sleek version of the Planet Express ship, presumably piloted by the one-eyed, purple-haired badass Turanga Leela (voiced by Katy Segal), as it soars through the congested traffic of the futuristic megalopolis hauling random packages to distant and dangerous worlds.
To create this footage, what he calls a ‘test shot,’ Zakharov used a combination of programs, including the likes of 3DS Max, Nuke, PhotoShop, and After Effects, to craft his CGI interpretation of the world of Futurama. This clip is insanely detailed, the intricate layers provide an incredible depth to the frame, and all of the elements are in play, except the music, though he probably worried about getting sued for using that, so you can understand using something different. No one likes a lawsuit.
This still shot gives you an even better look at Zakharov’s rendering of the Planet Express ship in action, climbing into the stratosphere, a stunning sunset glowing in the distance.
This quick ten-second clip provides you with a complete, 360-degree view of the iconic delivery ship, which though less spectacular than the whole picture, is incredibly detailed and thorough in its own right. You get a real sense of the attention to detail and time that Zakharaov put into manufacturing this footage and these images.
For those of you not in the know, shame on you. There are ten seasons of Futurama on Netflix, so you should stop whatever you’re doing right now and catch up. It’ll be worth it. The story follows the adventures of a slacker pizza delivery boy named Fry who is accidentally cryogenically frozen at the turn of the millennium. He wakes up 1000 years later and has to learn to navigate a world of future world of sassy drunk robots, aliens of all varieties, a mad-scientist great nephew, and love. It’s a good time, and one that you definitely need to add to your list of must-sees.
