We’re all excited for the season five premiere of Fringe on Fox. Unfortunately, we have to temper our enthusiasm with the knowledge that this will be the final time we get to see the Fringe team in action. At least we know that going in, which gives the show the opportunity to wrap things up instead of having the bomb of your favorite show being cancelled dropped at an inopportune moment.

Earlier this week we saw the first trailer for season five, which, aside from setting an ominous tone, and watching the Observers walk against a black background, didn’t provide much information. Hot on the heels of that clip, comes another short glimpse at the season premiere, an episode titled “Etta.”

We know that a large portion of season five will take place in the future, in the year 2036, a world first established in the season four episode, “Letters of Transit.” In this future the Observers, who come from even further in the future where they have trashed the planet, have established an Orwellian dystopia. Set photos show some Big-Brother-is-watching style propaganda, and guards in fascist looking military outfits.

How much of season five takes place in 2036 remains to be seen, but at least portions of “Etta” take place in the present. Or relatively close to our time, at least. We see Peter Bishop (Joshua Jackson) and Olivia Dunham (Anna Torv) in a park with their daughter, Henrietta. Henrietta wasn’t even a bump under Olivia’s pea coat at the end of season four, so enough time has passed that she has not only been born, but has had the chance to age a few years.

We also get the chance to see the beginnings of the Observer invasion taking place, as well as flashes of the team together and in action in the future. We’ll have to tune in to see if Fringe Division can save the planet from enslavement, or if humanity is doomed to an existence of subservience.

Fringe premieres on Friday, September 28th on Fox.
