Firefly LEGO Set Meets Its Goal

A few days ago we wrote about the Firefly Serenity LEGO playset, which needed popular support to become a reality. Thanks to like-minded sci-fi fans, and Browncoats internet wide, the project reached the needed 10,000 votes on LEGO CUUSOO (a website where you can submit, view, and vote on prospective LEGO sets). Fans of Joss Whedon’s short-lived space western have been tweeting, blogging, pestering cast members, and generally doing everything they can to drum up support for this endeavor, and all that hard work has finally paid off.

Next up for the Firefly Serenity venture is the review stage. Now that it has been made apparent that there is a market for this set, a group of LEGO honchos get together and take a look at the submission. They evaluate the design based on a number of factors, like safety, playability, and such, and determine if this is something they want to develop further. Cost-effectiveness must factor into the decision as well, and for now, fans and crew alike will have to be patient and wait for the final verdict.

Even if the LEGO higher ups pass on his idea, designer “tbone_tbl” vows to make his product available to the masses. Some in the Firefly Serenity comments have expressed concern about the inclusion of the character Inara (Morena Baccarin), who is essentially a space prostitute. If there is enough demand, LEGO will surely find away around this little hiccup.

tbone writes:

In the event they don’t/can’t move forward with this I fully intend to make my own instructions. So a lego serenity WILL happen, it’s just a matter of when and who the instructions are printed by.

So don’t worry, those of you who can’t live without this addition to your LEGO arsenal, one way or another, you’ll one day be able to hold this in your sweaty little palms. You may have to download the design from tbone, but you will be able to make your very own LEGO version of Serenity.
