That Fantastic Four Trailer Is Just An Interstellar Trailer In Disguise

It’s no secret that there is a certain level of specified talent needed to cut a film trailer, whether you’re going for mysterious thrills or in-your-face action. It’s like math. As such, the amount of overlap in techniques is getting all the more recognizable as time goes on. Never has that been more clear than in the Fantastic Four trailer below, which matches up perfectly with audio from the Interstellar trailer, in a way that seems to defy reality.

First of all, I’m going to scream into my hands if Michael B. Johnson starts quoting Dylan Thomas during Fantastic Four, but I doubt that’s going to happen. (Kate Mara screaming “Eureka” and throwing things into the air also counts.) I wasn’t that big of a fan of the Fantastic Four trailer to begin with, even though it wasn’t as terrible as the film’s pre-buzz has been. And now I guess I know that part of the reason why I liked it in the first place is because it probably tapped into that innate part of me that thinks trailers for Christopher Nolan movies are awesome, regardless of my feelings for the finished product.

Mimicry is the sincerest form of flattery, after all, even though we’re mostly talking about trailer editors over directors themselves. (I know that some directors have a hand in it, too.) But still, focusing on the pre-Fantastic period means that the astronaut stuff got shows more, and then there’s the cornfield, and that one shot where the camera drifts up into the sky, and WHAT IS HAPPENING HERE?!?

As Josh Trank’s follow-up to his highly successful 2012 flick Chronicle, Fantastic Four has a lot to live up to. Not only in showing what the filmmaker can do, but in giving Marvel fans another non-Marvel Studios franchise they can latch onto that doesn’t involve seeing Peter Parker go through the same old shit. The film has constantly been in the Internet doghouse over everything from the Storm family’s new look to the previous lack of a trailer with only seven months to go until the release. Recent news of reshoots in Baton Rouge only led to more people shooting out ostensibly useless ire.

With the awesome Toby Kebbell as the villainous Dr. Doom (or whatever he ends up being), Inception Fantastic Four hits theaters like a ton of Grimm bricks on August 7.
