Exodus Teaser Serves Up Danish Space Opera

When we first ran across Tommy Ipsen’s multi-platform sci-fi opus, Exodus, we couldn’t help but be intrigued. Produced with help from the Danish Film Institute, this is a big, high-concept offering that is finishing up a pilot to premiere at the Berlin Film Festival later this year. We’ve seen images of the painted backgrounds of Exodus, but now the first teaser trailer has arrived.

Ipsen and company know full well that it’s tricky to compete with Hollywood when it comes to budgets, so they’re taking a road less traveled. The production hired acclaimed artist Thomas Pringle, who worked on the Wachowskis’ Cloud Atlas, to design the visual elements of the world. From that point movies usually have other people create sets and special effects based on the original concept art. In the case of Exodus, however, Ipsen intends to use Pringle’s actual pieces in the project.

The end result will be a conglomeration of big art pieces, 3D modeling, and green-screen. As you can see in this trailer, the finished product is a stylized take on the sci-fi/fantasy space opera. They’ve embraced their constraints and restrictions. There are some cheesy moments, to be sure, but they’re done with a wink and a nudge.

Exodus is the story of a “far future human settlement on a distant planet populated by mindless giants.” Intended to sprawl across numerous platforms, including film, TV, books, and games, Exodus stars Thomas Chaanhing, Cyron Melville (The Killing), Brigitte Nielsen (you know, the one who hooked up with Flava Flav), Matias Varela (Snabba Cash), and Kristofer Hivju (The Thing).
