New Elysium Trailer Focuses On The Story

“Activate Kruger!” Neill Blompkamp’s Elysium is one of the most anticipated science fiction movies of the summer. The long-awaited follow-up to Blomkamp’s 2009 surprise hit District 9 seems to be blending the same sort of social allegory with heavy science fiction action. Now Sony has released a new trailer for Blomkamp’s latest, which focuses more of the film’s narrative.
While the new trailer is exciting and thrilling, it really feels like we’ve watched the whole movie already. We see how Max De Costa (Matt Damon) gets sick and why he wants to risk everything to go to the orbiting space station called Elysium. We also get a glimpse of Secretary Delacourt’s (Jodie Foster) ruthlessness in keeping Elysium free of “undocumented” people. Hopefully there will be some genuine mystery left when the film finally arrives.
Elysium takes place in the year 2154, when the world’s population is separated into two distinct social classes: the powerful and mega-wealthy live a luxurious, disease-free lifestyle on the orbiting space station called Elysium, while everybody else is left to toil for limited food and water on a ruined, overpopulated Earth.
Max De Costa only has five days left to live, and his only hope for survival is to undertake a risky mission to Elysium to find a cure. If his mission is successful, he could bring social equality to all of humanity. Elysium’s Secretary Delacourt is sworn to protect its citizens from outsiders, and enforce its harsh anti-immigration laws, so she sends a bounty hunter named Kruger (Sharlto Copley) to stop Max at any cost.
The new Blomkamp film also features actors Wagner Moura, Alice Braga, Diego Luna, William Fichtner, and Faran Tahir as Minister Patel.
Elysium will hit theaters everywhere on August 9, in IMAX.
