Max Vs. KrugerThink about it. If Sony didn’t push back Elysium from its initial March release date to an August one, we probably would’ve seen Neill Blompkamp’s latest already and eagerly awaited its Blu-ray/DVD release by now. But as it stands, Elysium is ready to hit theaters in two short months and will hopefully be the centerpiece of a very science fiction heavy summer movie season. To build anticipation for the sci-fi social allegory, Sony released a new image showcasing Max Da Costa (Matt Damon) wearing a robotic exoskeleton getting ready to kick some ass.

The above image almost has a Mad Max feel to it with its vision of a dystopian future. It just feels very dry. It also looks like Max is about to have an epic battle with the bounty hunter Kruger (Sharlto Copley). Whether or not Max will win the fight, we’ll just have to wait to watch the film this August.

Set in the distant future in the year 2154, Elysium takes place in a world where there are only two distinct social classes: the wealthy and powerful live a very luxurious and disease-free lifestyle on the orbiting space station called Elysium, while the very poor are left to toil for food and water in a mad, chaotic civilization on the overpopulated Earth.

Max has recently developed cancer and his only hope for survival is to take a risky mission to Elysium to find a cure. The only thing that stands in his way is Secretary Delacourt (Jodie Foster), a hardline government official who will stop at nothing to enforce Elysium’s anti-immigration laws. Delacourt sends the ruthless bounty hunter Kruger to stop Max from reaching the orbiting sanctuary.

Neil Blompkamp’s follow-up to District 9 also features actors Alice Braga, Diego Luna, William Fichtner, Wagner Moura, and Faran Tahir as Minister Patel.

Elysium will hit theaters everywhere on August 9th. Watch Elysium’s trailer below:
