The Eleventh Doctor’s Ten Best Moments

So long, raggedy man.

If I had to pick only one moment from this list as the single best the Eleventh Doctor’s run has had to offer, it would be this one, no question. While the picks above showcase the Doctor’s cleverness, daring, and fearlessness in the face of seemingly hopeless situations, that’s not the Doctor’s most important or beloved characteristic. As he says in “The Day of the Doctor,” the promise of his name is “Never cowardly or cruel. Never give up, never give in.” But he’s more than just “not cruel” — he is often very kind, and his messianic love for humanity, both as a whole and as individuals, is what’s shaped the show all along. Here he ignores all the rules about avoiding paradoxes or mucking with established events, not to save the universe, but as an act of kindness to a great man who is in pain. Never mind the Eleventh Doctor’s run, this is one of the best moments of the entire series, a perfect scene that gets me choked up every damn time.
