“Live. Die. Repeat.” The new science fiction film Edge of Tomorrow, starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt, won’t open in theaters until June 2014, but we’re getting a first look at it now with its new trailer. Based on Hiroshi Sakurazaka’s novel All You Need Is Kill, Edge of Tomorrow features a future war against alien attackers, and a soldier who dies in action, only to awaken again, reliving the day he died. Tom Cruise plays Lt. Col. Bill Cage, a soldier caught in a time loop during a battle with a hostile alien race known as Mimics. The trailer looks like a mix between Starship Troopers and a science fiction action version of Groundhog Day. Is it me, or is Tom Cruise too old to be playing a down-and-out soldier in the middle of combat? While he looks cool with a pimped-out mech suit/exoskeleton, it almost looks too comical to watch Tom Cruise move through a futuristic battle scene like the ones featured in the trailer above.

Honestly, All You Need Is Kill is a much better title than Edge of Tomorrow, which just sounds like a generic science fiction film. All You Need Is Kill has a bite to it, while Edge of Tomorrow just comes off as ho-hum. But what’s in a name? The film has a good chance to be thrilling and exciting, but just based on the premise of repeating the same scenes over and over again, there’s also a chance the movie might get tedious. One of the reasons why the premise works in Groundhog Day is Bill Murray’s memorable performance. Tom Cruise will have to be pretty damn compelling and charming to pull it off in Edge of Tomorrow.

Edge of Tomorrow takes place in the distant future, after an alien race called Mimics have attacked the Earth. Cruise plays Col. Cage, an army officer who is thrown into combat with very little training and experience in the field. He is killed within minutes, but is caught in a time loop that forces him re-live the battle again. Throughout the film, Col. Cage has to fight and die again and again, until he figures out a way to stop the cycle and defeat the invading alien race with the help of Special Forces warrior Rita Vrataski (Blunt).

All You Need Is Kill project has been in development at Warner Bros. since 2010, with various screenwriters including Joby Harold, Steve Kloves, Christopher McQuarrie, Tim Kring, Jez Butterworth, Alex Kurtzman & Roberto Orci touching up, polishing, and re-writing its script. It was directed by Doug Liman, who is serviceable in the action film genre with movies like The Bourne Identity, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, and Jumper under his belt.

In addition to Cruise and Blunt, the film also features Lara Pulver, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Jeremy Piven, Bill Paxton, Charlotte Riley, and Jonas Armstrong. Edge of Tomorrow will hit theaters everywhere on June 6, 2014.
