Edgar Wright’s The World’s End will be the final film in the “Blood and Ice Cream (Three Flavours Cornetto) Trilogy,” which began with Simon Pegg and Nick Frost’s Shaun of the Dead in 2004 and continued in Hot Fuzz. Edgar Wright says the movie will riff on the “social science fiction” genre, and Universal Studios has released a new image that shows the main cast of The World’s End paying homage to Michael Bay’s Armageddon.
Of course, Michael Bay was also paying homage to Philip Kaufman’s The Right Stuff with that image, and it’s been done countless times since. The tag line of The World’s End — “Good Food. Good Ales. Total Annihilation.” — and the image invoke some sort of the end-of-the-world scenario. Compare the above image to Michael Bay’s Armageddon below:
Simon Pegg plays Gary King, a 40-year-old who refuses to grow up and assembles his old friends to relive their glory days and recreate an epic pub crawl of their youth. Little do they know that the fate of the world is in their hands. The World’s End will also star Nick Frost, Martin Freeman, Rosamund Pike, Eddie Marsan, David Bradley, and Paddy Considine.
Simon Pegg co-wrote The World’s End with Edgar Wright. Pegg described the film as being “a much bigger proposition than the other two films.” If you’re a fan of Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, The World’s End will most likely not disappoint.
The World’s End will hit theaters everywhere on August 23rd.
