After Earth TV Spot Offers Condensed Version of Trailer

There are only a few more days until we get to see if Oblivion matches up to our expectations, and then we can move from Tom Cruise to Will Smith in the category of “1990s box office champions whose films haven’t amazed audiences and critics in quite some time.” And it’s an M. Night Shyamalan film, so 2013 is going to be an exercise in both patience and anger management.
I’m not even sure if there’s anything different going on in the above clip than what was already seen in the other trailer. It gives us the admittedly shocking opening moment where Will Smith gets ripped away from the vehicle they’re traveling in. It shows off the ship/plane’s damage and a fearful Jaden Smith. It spends a few seconds on Kitai (Jaden Smith) and General Cypher (Will Smith) flying around like they bought “Bat-Man” suitsfrom the Acme corporation. And then, of course, we get a look at what a thousand years has done to a war-ravaged Earth and its creatures.
Could this possibly be a Shyamalan flick that doesn’t rely entirely on a surprising twist or an anime fanbase? A father and son forced to seek shelter and find a way to get themselves off of an entirely vacant planet; it’s an interesting plot.
On June 7th, we’ll figure out just how suicidal this movie makes the science fiction community. With any luck, there will be enough of us left to spread the word. Here’s the full trailer, which suspends just enough disbelief to allow anticipation to creep through.
