After Earth Clip Features Will & Jaden Smith In Danger

With a new early release date, After Earth could be the perfect comeback for director M. Night Shyamalan. Although his movies are big box office hits, general audiences and critics are onto Shyamalan’s “surprise” method of storytelling. After Earth has a good premise and a good cast, it just needs to be a good movie. The clip above can shed some insight to what we might get in theaters at the end of May.
The clip features General Cypher Raige (Will Smith) and his son Kitai (Jaden Smith) after they have crashed on Earth. This is the first time in 1,000 years that humans have set foot on their home planet. Their only hope for rescue is if Kitai embarks on a dangerous mission to find the ship’s communication beacon to call for help. The only thing between Cypher and Kitai is 100km (about 62 miles) of alien terrain and deadly animals.
You can’t tell much from a 51-second clip, but After Earth has the potential to be M. Night Shyamalan’s return to form. It the film keeps it simple and doesn’t have a stupid twist at the end, it could be something like Shyamalan’s 2000 film, Unbreakable. Is there any hope for M. Night Shyamalan these days?
Gary Whitta (Book of Eli) and Stephen Gaghan (Traffic) co-wrote the screenplay for After Earth, while M. Night Shyamalan (The Last Airbender, The Village) co-wrote and directed the upcoming sci-fi film. Will Smith and his producing partner and wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, served as the film’s producers.
After Earth will hit theaters everywhere on May 31st, in IMAX.
