With Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim tapdancing all over the pop-culture landscape in the run up to its July opening, audiences are being introduced to a notion most of GFR’s target demographic have known all along: mechs are awesome. But they don’t have to be the size of skyscrapers to embrace their awesomeness. Sometimes all they have to let you do is climb inside the cockpit and shoot your buddies in the face with a chain gun. That’s the sort of good, old-fashioned fun the upcoming game Titanfall is offering us, just as God intended.

Titanfall is the long-awaited first game from Respawn Entertainment, the studio founded by Call of Duty co-creators Jason West and Vince Zampella. The project has been the source of tons of rumors over the past few years, but the claims that it was a science fiction first-person shooter were proven true at E3 yesterday, courtesy of the first trailer and gameplay footage from Titanfall. And while trailers can sometimes lie (Aliens: Colonial Marines), Titanfall’s mix of Call of Duty-style multiplayer action wrapped in futuristic badassery like jetpacks and combat mechs will likely be just what the doctor ordered for devout FPS players.

The game is multiplayer focused — at this point it doesn’t sound like there’s a singleplayer campaign at all, which may be a good or a bad thing, depending on your tastes. While the mechs promise to make for a damn good time, you don’t start out with them right out the gate. Players have to accomplish goals, make kills, etc., all of which earns you points that will speed up how quickly you can summon your mech and start stomping on other player’s heads. (But can you hit a monster in the face with a boat?)

Titanfall is set to release for Xbox 360, Xbox One, and PC in spring 2014.
