There have been a ton of high-profile games debuting new trailers or gameplay footage at E3 this week, but we also got confirmation of a game that’s been rumored to be in the works for a while now. Avalanche Studios, the folks behind the surprisingly fun Just Cause games, got to premiere a new trailer announcing that, yes indeed, there is a Mad Max game racing toward us.

It makes a lot of sense. Games have often explored apocalyptic settings, from the nuke-blasted wastes of the Fallout series to the over-the-top zombie mayhem of the Dead Rising games. But one of the big screen’s classic apocalyptic landscapes, that of George Miller’s Mad Max movies, had thus far only gotten a 1990 NES game. Needless to say, it’s ripe with potential for a modern revival. Even more important from a business standpoint, Miller’s take on the end of the world is returning to the big screen with the long-in-the-works Mad Max: Fury Road. Cross-media synchronicity, baby!

The cinematic trailer above doesn’t actually tell us much about the game, aside from the fact that it will involve Max Rockatansky, the character originally played by Mel Gibson and passed on to Tom Hardy for Fury Road. It’s said to be a “third-person open-world vehicular combat game,” which certainly makes sense given the source material. The trailer never gives us a good look at Max’s face, but given that both the game and the new movie are set to release sometime in 2014, we should probably expect him to be wearing Tom Hardy’s face.

Mad Max will be available on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 sometime in 2014. The PS4 version will also apparently have some exclusive bonus content.
