Given that the original Dead Rising was one of the first really noteworthy games to debut on the Xbox 360 back in the day, it’s not surprising that Microsoft carted out some gameplay footage from the upcoming Dead Rising 3 as they were introducing their Xbox One console to the world. The footage looks as gorgeous as most of the next-gen games being showed off at E3 this week, but the third Dead Rising game also looks like it’ll be a more serious, less wacky romp than the batty-as-shit Dead Rising 2.

Dead Rising 3 will follow a mechanic named Nick Ramos, an average, blue-collar kind of guy who, wouldn’t you know it, finds himself in the middle of the zombie apocalypse. The third game looks to be sticking with the basics of the DR franchise: large open worlds, crazy improvised weaponry, over-the-top violence, and lots and lots and lots of zombies. Just based on the footage above, however, Dead Rising 3 seems to be dialing back the Saints Row-esque lunacy a bit. That could be a good or bad thing. The willfully bonkers tone of Dead Rising 2 is one of the reasons it was so much fun, and going for a more down-to-Earth approach means it’s got one less thing to help it stand out amongst the ton of other zombie games out there these days. Heck, we’ve already got some awesome Walking Dead games for that.

Dead Rising 3 will release on the Xbox One in early 2014.
