What’s the worst part of a drunken one-night-stand? The impending alien invasion that happens the next morning as you’re awkwardly trying to pull on your pants as you sneak towards the door or usher a hungover stranger out of your apartment. I hate that part. That’s the basis for the new sci-fi comedy Extraterrestrial from Timecrimes director Nacho Vigalondo. You can see for yourself in this teaser trailer.

Here’s the official synopsis:

When Julio wakes up in a strange apartment after a night of partying, he’s pleasantly surprised to discover it belongs to a beautiful one-night-stand he can’t remember – Julia. What’s already an awkward situation is made even more so when they discover a giant flying saucer hovering above the city, which is now deserted. Now Julio must contend with a jealous ex-boyfriend, an eccentric neighbor – and very possibly the end of the world!

This looks like it could be a blast. You don’t see many combinations of sci-fi and romantic comedies, and hell, throw the inappropriate use of a tennis ball cannon into any situation and you add a few laughs.

I’m going to be lucky enough to catch Extraterrestrial at the Seattle International Film Festival next week, but don’t worry, the rest of you will be able to find see it for yourselves soon. Extraterrestrial gets a limited theatrical run starting June 15 and expanding on June 22. The film will also get a simultaneous unveiling on video on demand.
