Dredd is coming! The new film adaptation of Judge Dredd is making its way into theaters in 3D on September 21st. To build anticipation for the upcoming movie, Lionsgate has released a new featurette for British audiences featuring actor Karl Urban, comic book creator John Wagner, and the film’s writer/producer Alex Garland describing the history of Judge Dredd. Check it out:
Karl Urban lays out the state of Dredd‘s bleak future: “There’s only one thing fighting for order in the chaos… Judges.” Dredd is set in a post-apocalyptic future where radiation fallout from the “Robot Wars” forces the remaining population of the world to live on the gritty streets of the giant Mega-City One. In this world, the Judges are a group of law enforcement officers who have the power to serve as judge, jury, and executioner.
The new film follows Judge Dredd (Karl Urban) as he breaks in his new rookie partner, Judge Cassandra Anderson (Olivia Thirlby). Together, they attempt to bring down a notorious drug lord named Ma-Ma (Lena Headey) by infiltrating her slummy, 200-story building.
Director Peter Travis’ vision of Dredd is considerably more violent and gritty than the 1995 version starring Sylvester Stallone. The early buzz from the special advanced Comic-Con screening suggests that the new Dredd is more faithful to the original 1977 British comic book 2000 AD, where the character of Judge Dredd first debuted. The quality of Dredd can only go up from the original Judge Dredd, which currently has a 15% “Rotten” rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Remaking bad movies should be the new trend in Hollywood.
