And now we reach my single favorite choice of this entire list. The notion of Gene Wilder as the Doctor fills me with childish, barely containable glee, and he would have made an excellent trade for Tom Baker, the actor who played the role the longest of all of them. In fact, if you want proof that Wilder would have been a stellar Doctor, I’d argue that he already played him…sort of. His brilliant performance of Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka is so Doctor-like that at this point I’m just retroactively deciding the candy maestro was a time lord all along. He’s got the whimsy. He’s got the boundless enthusiasm. But he can also pull off the dark, sinister notes with pitch-perfect finesse. If you want a Doctor who could both delight and scare the shit out of you, Wilder would have been the bee’s knees (a phrase I have never used before and will likely never use again.) Just go watch the boat ride scene from Willy Wonka and then tell me otherwise.
