Doctor Who Season 9 Has Already Started Filming, Here’s What We Know

We’re only a few weeks removed from the most recent Doctor Who Christmas special, not to mention the news that Jenna Louise Coleman is staying on as the Twelfth Time Lord’s latest companion. Now the BBC just announced that the cameras are already rolling at the Cardiff studio for season 9, as well as revealed a list of guest stars for the first episodes of the season.
One of the visiting stars of the debut, which is a two-part affair, will be familiar to fans of HBO’s Game of Thrones. Actor and comedian Paul Kaye, who plays Thoros of Myr, the leader of the Brothers Without Banners in the third season of the fantasy epic, stops by for a turn, and seems pretty excited about it. He says:
As a kid of the 1970s, the two shows you always watched were ‘Top of the Pops’ and ‘Doctor Who,’ they were unmissable. I actually wrote a song called ‘Looking for Davros’’in my first punk band and I sang it like a demented Dalek. I got to present TOTP back in the mid ‘90’s and landing this role in Doctor Who completes the dream double. Peter is a perfect Doctor and I’m loving every minute of the experience, even the five hours in make-up. What a treat, best 50th birthday present ever!
Kaye is not the only new face that will appear in this double episode, as there’s also a laundry list of other British actors you’ve probably seen pop up now and again. The call sheet includes Morven Christie, Arsher Ali, Colin McFarlane, Sophie Stone, Zaqi Ismail, Steven Robertson, and Neil Fingelton. Executive producer, lead writer, and showrunner Steven Moffat calls this “an amazing guest cast.”
Though he doesn’t actually shed any light on what the plot of the premiere entails, Moffat does say it’s “a brilliantly creepy two-parter by Toby Whithouse (Being Human).” He goes on to add that, “Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman are back in Cardiff, back in the box, and back in action—for one of our scariest adventures yet!”
For his part, Capaldi, a lifelong Whovian, is also rather stoked to be back in the saddle, saying, “The adventures begin again for myself and Jenna and I’m delighted to be back filming my second series of Doctor Who.”
There’s no hard and fast date set for the premiere of Doctor Who season 9, but it is expected to drop later on in the fall.
