Doctor Who May Get Multiple 50th Anniversary Specials

There’s no question that big things are in store for Doctor Who next year as the show celebrates its 50th anniversary. We know there will be bittersweet departures. There will be a cute new companion. There will be impossibly cool guest stars. And, according to current Doctor Matt Smith, there will be not one, but several anniversary specials.

That word comes from the latest issue of Doctor Who Magazine (as reported by Doctor Who TV), where Smith is quoted as referencing the first anniversary special, which could be a slip of the tongue, but which certainly suggests there will indeed be more than one Who special coming our way next year. Smith also says that Stephen Moffat has told him what’s to come in this first anniversary special, and that it’s “as brilliant and mental as you’d expect.”

While Smith may have inadvertently let the cat out of the bag when it comes to the anniversary specials, he’s quite a bit more tight-lipped when it comes to the eighth series that’s still a ways down the road (likely in 2014). Again, Moffat has given Smith the inside scoop on the show’s future, but all Smith would say about it is, “Are you ready to cry?”

Those multiple anniversary specials should make the long wait between series 7 and series 8 just a tiny bit more tolerable. What should Who fans expect? Series 7 will kick off with an episode entitled “Asylum of the Daleks”…which suggests Moffat wasn’t kidding when he said the Daleks would be returning in a big way.
