Doctor Who Fans: Put Your Face In The Iconic Opening Credits

You there! In the fez and the bowtie! The one with the sonic screwdriver replica tucked into your belt and the tiny, attractive brunette at your side! I see that you’re just getting back home, no doubt from one of those “Halloween parties” I’m always hearing about. So you’re using a costume-related holiday as an excuse to pretend to be your very favorite Time Lord, are you? Well, that’s all well and good, and I do admire your attention to detail, but before you pass out into an alcohol-induced coma, I’ve got something you might like to see. How’d you like to make your Doctor disguise that much more authentic? Howsabout actually sticking your face into Doctor Who’s iconic opening credits sequence?
Yes, through the miracle of technology, it can be your dapper mug rising up out of the chaotic time vortex as that catchy bum-ba-bum ba-bum-ba-bum ba-bum-ba-bum ba-bum ba-bum bum” music rips forward out of your speakers. And you don’t even have to kidnap any of the people who actually make those opening credits sequences! In fact, you should untie them and let them go right away because that’s not okay, man, you’ve taken things too far…
As a way of promoting The Day of the Doctor, the upcoming Doctor Who 50th anniversary special, the BBC has released a new Facebook app that will let you select a photo of yourself and have that inserted into the credits sequence (It’s the current Matt Smith, seventh-season version for those keeping score). The only downside is that, while it will give you a unique URL where you can see your video as many times as you want, it doesn’t look like there’s a way to just save it to your hard drive for future use. (How many times have I been in a situation where I desperately needed a video of the Doctor Who credits with my face in them? So embarrassing.)
Also, the whole idea behind the face-a-lizer widget is to send an invite for it to your friends and thus promote the show. Since you may or may not want to barrage your Facebook friends with Doctor Who spam, be careful which buttons you push.
The Day of the Doctor will simulcast its premiere all around the world on November 23. If you don’t have anything better to do until then, you can always rewatch your special Doctor Who video over and over and over and over…
