Could Disney Wind Up Owning The Transformers Too?

Disney’s purchase of Lucasfilm has been the big story over the past week. The deal adds the Star Wars franchise to Disney’s entertainment empire that already boasts entertainment big guns such as Pixar and Marvel. But while we’re all busy speculating about what Episode VII will look like when it arrives in 2015, there’s a new rumor floating around that the House of Mouse has yet another major entity in its sights: Hasbro, which would give them properties such as the Transformers, G.I. Joe, and Dungeons and Dragons.
The rumor comes from MTV Geek, and it is very much just a rumor at this point. They cite anonymous sources in reporting that the bigwigs at Disney and Hasbro are in early discussions about the prospect of fitting Hasbro for a pair of Mickey ears. From the sound of things, even if the rumors are accurate, it may still be a long while before we hear anything official about it.
Aside from Hasbro’s assorted toy lines, this would also give Disney ownership of the Transformers film franchise, and like the films or not, there’s no question they’re a massive cash cow. Since the upcoming fourth film is supposedly shaking things up, possibly even being an outright reboot, I have to wonder if Disney and Hasbro might have an eye toward announcing the sale in time to make it part of the hype running up to Transformers 4.
Or…it could be just a rumor and nothing more. But if Disney did buy Hasbro, what could we expect? Maybe the Transformers/G.I. Joe crossover comics I used to read would become fodder for the silver screen. Or hell, at least we might finally get a decent Dungeons and Dragons movie.
