amy adamsAcademy Award nominated director Denis Villeneuve is most known for his tense, atmospheric dramas like Prisoners and Enemy. Though that last title definitely has touches of the surreal, the Canadian filmmaker has never really delved into the realm of science fiction, but he’s diving in head first over his next couple of films. It came out recently the he will helm the upcoming Blade Runner 2, and he is also set to take the lead on the sci-fi film Story of your Life, which just added two big time stars to the cast: Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner.

Based on the short by Hugo and Nebula Award-winning writer Ted Chiang, Story of Your Life tells the tale of an alien race landing on Earth and the people who must decipher their intentions before it’s too late. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Adams will play a linguist recruited by the U.S. government to help in this effort. She learns to communicate with the visitors and experiences flashbacks that are the key to divining their true purpose. Renner will play a physicist who teams up with Adams’ character.

Jeremy RennerAdams and Renner last worked together on David O. Russell’s scam drama, American Hustle, a few years ago. This is part of a hectic schedule for Renner coming up. He’s in Avengers: Age of Ultron, which hits theaters May 1, followed by Mission: Impossible 5 later this summer. It was just announced that he’ll appear as Hawkeye in Captain America: Civil War, which is slated to shoot this spring, and moving on from that he’ll film Story of Your Life. Adams’ name has been thrown around in regards to this film for a while, we first heard mention of it last April, and she’ll reprise her role as Lois Lane in Batman Vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Eric Heisserer (The Thing prequel, The Nightmare on Elm Street remake, Final Destination 5) handled the writing duties on Story of Your Life. This tense, strange story sounds like it will provide Villeneuve with a great deal to work with, and he should turn this into something dark and moody and interesting.

This project has been a long time coming as we first heard of development back in 2012, but it certainly looks like their patience has paid off as they’ve put together one hell of a team.
