If you’re wandering through the woods and encounter a talking chimpanzee that appears to be the leader of a large pack of apes of all kinds, and he tells you to go, you should probably seriously consider getting the hell out of there at your earliest convenience. That’s the general lesson you are going to take away from this video, which also happens to be the first clip from director Matt Reeves’ upcoming Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.

Unleashed by MTV, this clips is all kinds of tense. When a group of survivors, led by Jason Clarke’s Malcolm, encounters a swarm of apes living amidst the California Redwoods, you can bet they’re all pretty close to crapping their collective pants. When their leader, Caesar (Andy Serkis) talks, making absolutely clear the answer to Carver’s (Kirk Acevedo) question about whether or not they understand, that’s a serious oh shit moment.

This is an ideal illustration of the tenuous peace that exists between humans and apes in the film. Neither side is particularly comfortable with the other, but at the same time, they know they don’t want to start any drama. After the events of Rise of the Planet of the Apes, where Caesar freed his simian brothers and sisters, leading them to freedom, a vicious plague tore through human civilization. Called the Simian Flu because it spread with the apes, though scientists manufactured the new plague in a laboratory, it has taken out more than half of the world’s population. In the ten years that elapse between films, society has crumbled and fallen into chaos while the apes have thrived and evolved left to their own devices.

When Malcolm’s small group of survivors is looking for a place to settle, they strike up an uneasy accord with Caesar’s band. For a time they are able to coexist and even become friends, but leave it up to people to ruin everything, and before long, there is an all out war going on between the species. And since this is called Planet of the Apes, we have a pretty good idea of how all of this is going to shake out.

This scene is apparently a teaser of a brank spanking new Apes trailer that is slated to drop tomorrow, June 18, at 11:07 pm Eastern. The film also stars Gary Oldman, Keri Russell, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Toby Kebbell, Judy Greer, and Enrique Murciano.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes opens everywhere in 3D on July 11.
