Michael Bay’s Transformers: Age of Extinction is about to take over the known theatrical world, but 20th Century Fox doesn’t want you to forget about their biggest movie release of the summer, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. They’re planning to unveil a new, and final, trailer tomorrow, but that’s not going to keep them from pumping up their film today. Earlier, they released the first clip from the movie, but now we’ve got an extended TV spot to add to that, as well as a brief teaser to remind you about the full trailer tomorrow.

After watching this video, it’s hard to imagine what more they want out of a full trailer. This teases your appetite for the action, lays out the basic story and conflict, and has both Gary Oldman firing a rocket launcher and apes on horseback riding through flames. Anything else they want to tell us about their movie is just icing on the cake at this point.

The story takes place ten years after the events of Rise of the Planet of the Apes, and as the apes escaped, they inadvertently spread a man made virus that wreaks havoc on the human population. This extended promo digs into the origins of the plague, explaining that it initially began life as a treatment for Alzheimer’s Disease, which, if you watched the last movie, you know. James Franco’s character in that movie, Will, who pops up for a brief cameo here, was attempting the cure the disease and used the treatment to enhance Caesar’s (Andy Serkis) mind and apparently doomed the human race in the process.

In the interim, the apes and some humans have formed and uneasy truce and learned to live together. The apes just want what their human counterparts want, to live and raise their families in peace. You see Caesar and Malcolm (Jason Clarke) bro-ing down like they’re almost friends. The apes know that there are good men, but they’re also acutely aware of the bad men, like Dreyfus (Gary Oldman), who want to exterminate them, and that a coming war is inescapable. I’m curious to see how they film handles Dreyfus. In the official prequel novel tie in, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes: Firestorm, he is portrayed as the voice of reason in the face of chaos, and he is obviously not that in any of the footage we’ve seen of him.

It will be interesting to see how, and if, they deal with this change. The obvious way would seem to be that losing loved ones to the so-called Simian Flu could push him over the edge, but we’ll have to wait and see. Until then, we’re content to see him bearing heavy arms.

When you’re walking along in the woods and hear a noise behind you, the last thing you want to see when you turn around is a giant, angry looking animal, no matter what it is. A pissed off gorilla definitely falls into this category, and that is exactly what Malcolm finds in this brief little clip. Just in case you weren’t already aware that a full trailer is coming tomorrow, this agitated ape is here to remind you.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes opens everywhere in 3D on July 11.
