David Tennant Has A Point, Matt Smith Has A Painting — New Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Pictures And Clip

We’re only two weeks away from the much-anticipated premiere of Doctor Who’s 50th anniversary special, The Day of the Doctor. If that still seems too long for your eager little heart(s) to tolerate, fear not — we’ll get to see a new trailer for the special sometime tomorrow, so keep an eye on GFR. In the meantime, however, we’ll have to make do with the four new Day of the Doctor images and a clip the BBC has released. We particularly like the one below, with David Tennant laying the Finger of Doom on…somebody.
POTENTIAL SPOILERS BELOW!
As you’d expect given the secrecy around the special, there’s not much we can glean from the pictures. However, combined with the official synopsis that was released a short while ago, we can make some guesses as to when some of the pictures are set. That synopsis hinted that the story would kick off in several different time periods, most likely with each Doctor in one of them, before things dovetail into the larger story. Part of the synopsis read, “in 1562, a murderous plot is afoot in Elizabethan England.” From the look of things, it seems the Tenth Doctor (David Tennant) — and presumably Rose Tyler (Billie Piper) as well — will be the one in ye olde England.
The synopsis also revealed that “something terrible” was awakening in London’s National Gallery. Our assumption had been that Eleven (Matt Smith) and Clara would be on that case, and indeed, the first clip from The Day of the Doctor confirms that. It also confirms a hint Smith had dropped at Comic-Con in San Diego this past summer. A fan had asked for a clue, any clue, as to what we’d see in the 50th anniversary special. Smith said, “Paintings.” And, well, he’s nothing if not accurate.
Clocking in at a mere 13 seconds, there’s not much to go on. Given that the painting is referred to as “Elizabeth’s credentials,” I think we can safely assume that’s “Queen Elizabeth,” which would then provide the link between the two Doctors’ adventures, and the excuse for the awesome team-up.
It’s also worth noting that the burning landscape in the picture looks…decidedly Gallifreyan. An image of the Time War, perhaps?
The BBC will be unleashing a new trailer for The Day of the Doctor — new assuming you weren’t one of the lucky ones who saw it at Comic-Con, that is — sometime tomorrow, so stay tuned for more. The Day of the Doctor premieres around the globe, and in select theaters, on Saturday, November 23.
