Damon LindelofCONTAINS MINOR SPOILERS FOR STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS: PLEASE READ WITH CAUTION!!!

Although the film hasn’t been released in the States, Star Trek Into Darkness is mostly seeing positive reviews from international film critics. When the Star Trek sequel opens in the U.S., the conversation will quickly shift from Star Trek Into Darkness to Star Trek 3.

While it’s still unclear whether or not J.J. Abrams will return to the director’s chair for Trek 3 (he’ll be a little busy with a small movie called Star Wars: Episode VII), screenwriter and Star Trek producer Damon Lindelof has some ideas about the third installment in the Star Trek reboot film series. According to Lindelof’s interview with HeyUGuys.co.uk, Star Trek 3 may feature a conflict between Starfleet and Klingons. Lindelof reveals, “You can never see enough Klingons, and I think in this film we’ve given the audience a little taste, but there’s also a promise that there’s a larger conflict on the horizon, and that would be fun to see.”

Although John Harrison (Benedict Cumberbatch) is Star Trek Into Darkness’ main villain, the Klingons do play a role in the sequel. Klingons were even featured in one of the film’s marketing materials, but when asked if Harrison would possibly return for Trek 3, Lindelof says, “To answer that question would be to determine whether or not he actually survives this movie, but if he survives this movie, I think that we would be incredibly stupid to not use him again.”

We’re still a long ways off from Star Trek 3. Paramount Pictures hopes that the third film would be ready for summer 2016, just in time for the 50th anniversary of Star Trek.

Star Trek Into Darkness will hit theaters everywhere on May 17th, in 3D, and will open on IMAX screens a few days earlier on May 15th. Take a look at the Klingons from Star Trek (with masks) and from Star Trek Into Darkness (without) below:
