Comic-Con 2014: Twelve Panels You Don’t Want To Miss On Saturday

Comic-Con 2014 is almost here! Beginning this Wednesday, one of the largest pop culture events around will completely overwhelm San Diego. There’s so much going on, it’s a monumental task just to figure out which of the countless panels and events you want to try and see. Well, we’re here to make your life just a little bit easier by running down all the panels that should be at the top of your must-see list. Here are our picks for the Saturday events you can’t afford to miss!
Warner Bros. Pictures (10:00am – 12:00pm, Hall H)
Warners has got two major science fiction pictures to show off in their Hall H presentation: George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road and the Wachowskis’ Jupiter Ascending (as well as the upcoming The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies). Unfortunately, the program guide doesn’t currently list which guests will be on hand to promote things. I would be very surprised if the notoriously media-shy Wachowskis put in an appearance, but I wouldn’t rule out stars Channing Tatum and/or Mila Kunis. On the Mad Max front, I’d guess we might see Miller on hand, and possibly even the new Max himself, actor Tom Hardy. I’d put the chances of somebody asking him to do the Bane voice at 230%. If nothing else, we know the panel will be screening footage from both movies.
It’s also worth noting that Jupiter Ascending was originally supposed to release this past weekend, before being shifted back to February 6, 2015. February obviously isn’t known as a month in which studios typically position their surefire hits, so you have to wonder how nervous Warners is about Jupiter Ascending — and perhaps justifiably so, as the Wachowskis last movie, Cloud Atlas, had a reported budget of $102 million and only earned $130 million worldwide. Either way, I’m sure Warners is hoping to generate some positive buzz by screening footage from Jupiter Rising, but it occurs to be that the Comic-Con demographic isn’t the crowd you’re going to have to convince if it’s going to be even a moderate success — you’ve got to win over the folks who don’t automatically want to see a crazy space opera about an albino wolf guy and a cleaning lady destined to be Queen of the Universe.
Legendary Pictures (12:25pm – 1:10pm, Hall H)
With a resume that includes such geektastic hits as Man of Steel, Godzilla, Pacific Rim, and Christopher Nolan’s Batman films, Legendary has become a major player in the sort of movies that populate our radar here at GFR. As is the case with several of the big Hall H presentations, specific details of what to expect are sparse, but upcoming Legendary releases include Nolan’s Interstellar, Jurassic World, Guillermo del Toro’s Crimson Peak, and Duncan Jones’ Warcraft movie. If you can actually get in, this is probably going to be one you don’t want to miss.
