The Nerd in the Classroom: Sci-fi as an Educational Tool
10am – 11am, Room 32AB
This panel might not be star-studded, but given our fondness for both science and science fiction here at GFR, we’d be remiss not to mention it. The panel will include Travis Langley (Henderson State University, Batman and Psychology) and Eric Bruce (Western Oregon University) joining Patrick Murphy (Fremont High, Weber State University).
Science Fiction and the Future
12pm – 1pm, Room 24ABC
I would hit up this panel simply for the chance to hear Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck — the duo who penned Leviathan’s Wake and its sequels under the pen name of James S.A. Corey. They’ll be joined onstage by Jason Hough (The Darwin Elevator), David Wellington (Chimera), Mira Grant (Parasite), Daniel Wilson (Amped), and D. J. MacHale (Sylo).
BBC America’s Doctor Who 50th Anniversary
12:30pm – 1:30pm, Hall H
The first big Hall H presentation of the day will include current Who stars Matt Smith and Jenna-Louise Coleman, executive producer Steven Moffat, An Adventure in Space and Time exec producer/writer Mark Gatiss, and actor David Bradley, who is playing William Hartnell in Gatiss’ aforementioned TV movie. Who knows, maybe they’ll announce the next person to play the Doctor (but we’re not holding our breath).
Under the Dome
2:15pm – 3:15pm, Room 6BCF
Stars Dean Norris (Breaking Bad), Mike Vogel (Bates Motel), and Rachelle Lefevre (Twilight) will appear, along with executive producers Brian K. Vaughan (Lost), Neal Bear (Law and Order: SVU), and Jack Bender (Lost).
Safety Not Guaranteed
2:30pm – 3:30pm, Room 23ABC
No relation to the movie of the same name, this panel will have sci-fi writers discussing “dystopian societies, postapocalyptic scenarios, enhanced (and deadly) abilities, and mysterious government branches make the future a not-so-safe place to be.” The panel will include Marie Lu (the Legend series), Gen Albin (Crewel), Brandon Sanderson (Steelheart), Margaret Stohl (Icons), Amy Tintera (Reboot), and Michael Johnston (Frozen).
Spotlight on Neil Gaiman
3pm – 4pm, Room 6DE
Gaiman is a Comic-Con staple who’s always charming and entertaining. He’ll be talking about the 25th anniversary of his Sandman comics, as well as all the other stuff on his career plate at the moment.
Starship Smackdown Redux 3D: Ultimate Platinum Collector’s Edition
3:30pm – 5pm, Room 6A
Fictional starships are pitted against each other in a slightly more organized version of a tradition fanboys and gals have been practicing pretty much from the moment there were two fictional starships to argue about. Participating will be Daren Dochterman (ST: TMP Special Edition), Chris Gossett (The Red Star: Rapidfire, Tales of the Jedi), Ashley E. Miller (X-Men: First Class, Thor), Steve Melching (Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Transformers: Prime), Robert Meyer Burnett (Free Enterprise, ST:TNG Blu-ray), Kathryn Reindl (Twisted, Twilight Zone), and moderator Mark A. Altman (Free Enterprise).
