Colombiana’s Jordi Molla May Play Riddick 3’s Villain

Riddick 3 is one of those things that seemed like a pipe dream not so long ago. Sure, star Vin Diesel and director David Twohy have been insisting it was still on for years now, but the box office train wreck that was Chronicles of Riddick suggested that was probably just wishful thinking. Imagine our surprise, then, when things really started to come together over the past few months. There was talk of principal photography beginning, we found out some more about the plot, and the sequel began actually announcing actor attachments. Now the role of the film’s main villain has a front-runner, with actor Jordi Molla in talks for the role.

If the name doesn’t sound familiar, you’ve almost certainly seen Spanish actor Molla playing the bad guy in movies such as Colombiana, Bad Boys II, and Knight and Day. Variety says Molla is in talks to play the role of Santana in Riddick 3, the leader of a mercenary squad tasked with capturing the elusive and dangerous Richard B. Riddick (Diesel). That will likely have him working with Katee Sackhoff, who was announced to be playing another mercenary in the film a few months back. Karl Urban is also starring.

Riddick 3 sounds like it’s assembling a solid cast, and I wish them well. I still love Pitch Black, and I had high hopes for Chronicles, only to have them dashed by a film bogged down by overcomplicated mythology and completely out of touch with what made Riddick awesome in the first place. This sequel seems to be getting back to basics — Riddick in a desolate landscape, playing cat-and-mouse with a bunch of people who don’t have a chance — so I’ve got my fingers crossed that Diesel and Twohy will redeem themselves. And if not, I’ve always got my Pitch Black Blu-ray and the rather awesome Riddick videogame.
